What does dreiform actually think about.... AI?

Interview on the topic of artificial intelligence at dreiform.

Phygital design (design between the digital interface and real space) is one of the drivers in dreiform's projects. Therefore, we are always on the lookout for the meaningful use of technologies that support our creative work. Currently also in our focus: artificial intelligence (AI). We have talked with dreiformers Mailin, Laura und Christian about this topic.

AI is a tool that offers new possibilities in design, but also has limitations.
Dr. Mailin Lemke
(dreiform, Designforscherin)

What experience have you had in relation to AI?

I have already worked on a research project with AI that dealt with design fiction. This involved designing a future scenario and generating images for it. As part of another project that revolved around the conceptualization of an AI exhibition, I also worked extensively with AI as a subject.

What risks do you see in the use of AI?

One risk is that the appreciation of design and the time it takes can suffer from the use of AI. In addition, there are unclear rules as to who is credited with the creative effort.

How do you see your role in the collaboration between humans and machines?

AI is a tool that offers new possibilities in design, but also has limitations. I see the role of AI as a new tool for humans, but not necessarily a replacement for human skills.

What opportunities do you see?

The use of AI can support work steps that are complex. For example, searching for mood images can be made easier.

I see AI as an augmented brain that can serve as our personal assistant.
Laura Somalz
(dreiform, 3D Designerin)

What experience have you had with AI?

As a 3D designer, I've already been involved with AI-generated images and text. I have found that this can be a very effective way to find inspiration and design with determination. With the help of chat GPT, I was able to improve and enhance my own texts.

What risks do you see?

There are concerns about the overuse of AI and privacy. It is important that humans are not replaced but supported. We should not forget that AI has learned from humans and they deserve credit for that. We should not put the productivity of AI above the value of human labor.

How do you see your role in the collaboration between humans and machines?

I see AI as an augmented brain that can serve us as a personal assistant. I think AI should only be used for specific tasks to assist us and make life and work easier.

What opportunities do you see?

The capabilities of an individual are no longer limited to individual talents. We can tap into a database full of helpful results. This opens up new opportunities for creative work and innovation. However, we should be aware that we are still responsible for the creative process ourselves and that AI only supports us.

We must be careful not to carelessly outsource our in-depth knowledge to AI and thereby lose expertise on the human side.
Christian Kühn
(dreiform, Creative Technologist und Softwareentwickler)

What experience have you had with it?

As a creative technologist and software developer at dreiform, I've had a lot of experience with machine learning and technology. For example, we wrote an article together about AI, and I've done experiments with large language models for potential story and concept generators. I also use AI in image generation to illustrate articles and use natural language processing in application development, e.g. for vector search.

What risks do you see?

Of course, there are risks in human-machine collaboration. We have to be careful that we don't carelessly outsource too many tasks to AI, which actually require in-depth knowledge, thereby losing expertise on the human side. The danger of technology creating more low-paying click jobs is also real. We must ensure that technology serves people and not the other way around.

How do you see your role in the collaboration between humans and machines?

In the future, professionals will increasingly have to learn to feed the machines in a meaningful way and to filter and sort "empathic", contextual information. Quality management will play an important role in this, and humans will act as gatekeepers to check the results. I think that we as dreiform can play an important role in this by taking human-machine collaboration to a new level.

What opportunities do you see?

I see many opportunities in human-machine collaboration. Through technology, we can develop smarter user interfaces that help us work more productively and focus on important decisions. At dreiform, we are committed every day to making innovation an experience and engaging our customers in the customer dialogue. I think we will continue to play an important role in this in the future.

dreiform knowledge: Intern session on opportunities and risks of AI applications

In the context of dreiform Wissen (our internal inspiration format) we discussed the topic of AI and the possibilities of using it in the design process - e.g. in the areas of graphics, space or software.

In addition to the possibilities offered by different platforms, a lively discussion arose about future developments and current risks.

We have already tested the first concrete applications. For example, in addition to our Christmas greeting 2022, we created this and another article together with AI. To do this, we used key points to generate texts and then checked the content. We varied and adjusted the tone of the texts in the process. In addition, we generated illustrations for the text blocks.
